2020 CENSUS CHAMPIONS: OUTREACH NEWSLETTER
Issue #3

Welcome to the Cook County 2020 Census Champions Outreach Newsletter

Dear Census Champion,

The time has come for everyone to be counted! Less than one week ago, the 2020 Census fully kicked off, and invitations continue to arrive in mailboxes across the nation. Currently, more than eleven million households have responded. America is stepping up to shape our future and ensure families and communities are counted.

This is all occurring during a period of uncertainty as we adjust to a new reality created by COVID-19. Our hope is that you and your loved ones remain healthy and safe during this time. Your outreach as a leader within your community is certainly needed now more than ever; and our hope is that you do so safely and with an abundance of caution. Here is the most updated guidance from the U.S. Census Bureau.

In circumstances where it's appropriate, continue to encourage the members of your community to respond to the census using methods that follow social distancing guidelines. For the first time Cook County residents can complete their census form online using a desktop computer, laptop, smartphone, or tablet. There are other ways to respond remotely including over the phone or by mail—all without having to interact with a census taker. Please encourage everyone to respond to the 2020 Census as soon as they receive their invitation — and when they’re finished, ask them to ensure their friends, families and social networks know about the importance of responding.

Members of our team have already completed their census online and we can assure you it is easy, and depending on the size of your family, can take as little as 10 minutes.

Although your community outreach efforts will be limited in the near term, you’re encouraged to still help ensure a complete and accurate count using digital outreach including email, social media and video conferencing. As you do so, please share your digital outreach efforts with us at TWEG Community so we can share with other Census Champions.

When posting and sharing information about the census online, encourage your circle of influencers to visit https://www.cookcountyil.gov/census to learn more, or simply direct them to https://my2020census.gov/ so they can submit their 2020 Census responses immediately. If you’ve misplaced your log on ID, no worries you can still complete the census.  See how at the end of this issue.

Due to recent impacts of COVID-19 Coronavirus, the completion date for data collection for the 2020 Census has been extended to August 14, 2020. However, that date can and will be adjusted if necessary as the COVID-19 situation evolves to achieve a complete and accurate count.

Data gathered from the census will ultimately help fund public health, emergency response, and the way Federal funds are allocated in the face of future national emergencies. During these trying times, take care of yourself, be proactive about maintaining your health, and check in with loved ones, and at-risk members of your community.

Best,

Census Week March 30 - April 1
The week of March 30 through April 3 has been designated CENSUS AWARENESS WEEK.  The Cook County Complete Count Census Commission’s Program Administrator, The William Everett Group, has developed a coordinated campaign to engage Cook County residents in the leadup to Census Day on April 1, with messaging via all of the County’s social media sites, through advertisements in media including radio, television, billboards, mobile, and via media stories.  Please visit the County’s FacebookTwitter and Instagram accounts to see the daily messages and amplify those messages by sharing them on your social media sites.

Linked HERE is your CENSUS WEEK SOCIAL MEDIA KIT. It includes images, videos and captions themed specifically targeted to hard-to-count populations.

Should you have ways to assist us in getting out the important message of completing the census let us know. We want to get the message out in newsletters, community papers and online.  Remember you can complete the census now by visiting my2020census.gov.  In most cases it takes less than 10 minutes to make this investment in the future of Cook County.

This stands as the most important census of our lifetime, and Cook County, alongside the U.S. and hundreds of organizations, are continuing to do everything possible to accurately count every American.  In Cook County We All Count!
INTRODUCING THE #WECOUNTCHALLENGE
K-12 Poster and Video Submission Contest
The #WeCountChallenge is a multi-media contest for the youth of Cook County to create and submit a video, or a poster, that answers the question “why my community counts?” in the context of the 2020 Census.

Anyone currently enrolled in grades K–12 in Cook County is encouraged to submit, either a video or poster, that tells their neighborhood's story. This is their chance to bring awareness to the challenges in their communities, and show the world what makes their neighborhood, and the people in it, special. Winners will receive gift cards, and runners-up will receive special recognition.

There will be three (3) winners in four (4) categories divided by grade level:
  • K – 2
  • 3 – 5
  • Middle School (6 – 8)
  • High School (9 – 12)
CLICK HERE TO SUBMIT YOUR ENTRY.

All entries must be received by 5pm, Friday April 14th, 2020.
